Melanie McKula — President and Chief Executive Officer

(Our fearless leader!) Current President and Chief Executive Officer for The Capitol Sea Devils. She is originally from Maryland and went to Penn State University. She currently lives in Great Falls, VA and also works as an office manager for a Title and Abstracting company in Fairfax. She has been with Sea Devils since 2004, first as a clinic coach then in the Developmental and Age Group programs.

Ian Handerhan Director of Coaching: Gold coach

Ian has been with TCSD since 2008 and has worked at every level of the program and currently coaches the Select and Gold Training programs at the St Albans site. Ian also serves as the Head Swim Coach at Army Navy Country Club (10+ years) and formerly of  Thomas Jefferson HSST girls and boys teams (8 years). At the latter he has coached 6 individual All-Americans (achieving over 25 All-American times) and 9 All-American relay teams bringing home 11 Conference, 5 Region, and 2 State titles. In his free time he teaches Latin and Math classes at St. Agnes School in Arlington.

Jared Diallo South Run Site Coach: Gold Coach

Jared started with TCSD in 2019 and has coached every level from AG2 through Gold. He currently serves as the Gold Coach at South Run.

In NVSL, Jared spent five seasons as the Head Coach of the Fox Hunt Splash and is currently the Head Coach of the Donaldson Run Thunderbolts. He has also coached with Robinson Swim & Dive since 2022, beginning as an assistant coach before being promoted to Head Coach in 2024. During his time at Robinson, Jared has coached multiple All-American athletes and helped lead the program to multiple District and Region championships.

At the LSC level, Jared serves as the Junior Coaches Representative for Potomac Valley Swimming.

Outside of the pool, you can usually find Jared performing on a stage somewhere or catching a Sox game.

Bender JCC

Theresa Vaghi - Program Coach, AG2

This is Theresa’s first year coaching SDS. Previous to SDS she’d coached for multiple teams including serving as the head coach at Bethesda Country Club for 8 summers. She is also, currently in her second year as head swim and dive coach at Walt Whitman High School, where last year she coached multiple All-American swimmers and divers, as well as bringing home a Boys Maryland State Championship. When she is not on the pool deck, she is a special education teacher with MCPS. In her free time, Theresa loves traveling, concerts, and relaxing at the beach! She is an avid DC sports fan and loves Xavier basketball.

Chelsea Hubble - Program Coach

Chelsea began coaching with TCSD in 2023 and coaches Age Group 3, Bronze, and Silver Groups at JCC and Holton Arms. As of 2024, she also coaches the Middle School and Upper School teams at Sidwell Friends School. Prior to the Sea Devils, she coached her hometown summer team, the Brunswick River Rapids. A previous competitive swimmer Chelsea understands the highs and lows of swimming, and relishes in the opportunity to give swimmers kind words, detailed feedback, and so many cheers.

South Run

 

Courtney Van Schagen — Program Coach: Age Group 1

Courtney is a proud product of the Northern Virginia Swim League, high school swimming, and winter training with the late Lou Sharp. She swam competitively from age 5-18, and coached at her home pool, Hayfield Farms, as well. She has two children who both swim for SDS with aspirations for college swimming and beyond. After many years as a Team Rep in the NVSL and on deck as a parent volunteer, the call of the chlorine became too hard to ignore and she returned to coaching in 2024 with AG1. Developmental programs are where the magic happens and Courtney is thrilled to help instill a love of the sport (and a solid dolphin kick!) in young swimmers.

Genevieve Edwards — Program Coach: Silver, Age Group 3.

Genevieve grew up swimming in the sunny state of Florida, where her passion for the sport began. Before joining the Sea Devils as a coach, she spent two years coaching at CSP in St. Louis, Missouri, while completing graduate school. Outside of the pool, she works in the health and disaster preparedness sector. When she’s not coaching or working, you can find her hiking with her dog or baking.

Paige Kassemsuwannakaeth — Program Coach: Select

Paige joined Sea Devils last season and brings years of experience both as a swimmer and coach. She swam competitively in college, specializing in sprint freestyle and backstroke, and has coached for several years at her local pool, Daventry. Outside of the pool, Paige works at Deloitte as a cybersecurity engineer. In her free time, you can find her walking her dog, Pocky, working out, or training for HYROX and DEKA races.

Camy Delean — Program Coach: Silver

Camy started with The Capitol Sea Devils in 2025. She has coached Silver and assisted with AG2 groups at South Run. Prior to Sea Devils, she was a swim instructor in Fredericksburg for ages 6 months to 50 years from 2019-2021. In 2017, she assisted coaching her ODSL summer league team. When she’s not on the pool deck, you can find Camy at her day job as a newspaper reporter, training for her next half marathon, or spending time with her beloved cat, Oswald. 

Jamie Visbeck — Program Coach: Age Group 3, Age Group 2

Jamie started with The Capitol Sea Devils in Spring 2026. He brings extensive experience in both coaching and education. He has previously coached at The St. James, working with both age group swimmers and Masters athletes, and has served as the Head Coach of the Newington Forest Neptunes for over a decade. Jamie brings a strong background in athlete development, practice planning, and creating a positive, team-first environment.

Outside of the pool, Jamie is an experienced educator who has taught across multiple grade levels, from elementary through high school, and has served in leadership roles in early childhood and elementary education. His experience as both a coach and educator, along with his ability to connect with athletes of all ages, makes him a great addition to the Sea Devils staff.

St Albans

 

Kelsey Magill - Program Coach: Age Group 3, Silver

Kelsey grew up in Ocean View, Delaware and moved to DC study political communication at The George Washington University. She grew up swimming and then coaching for the Sea Colony Sharks in Bethany Beach. She has been coaching with TCSD since 2013. Outside of the pool, where she currently coaches AG3 and Silver programs at St. Albans, Kelsey lives in Glover Park and works full-time as a non-profit fundraiser for a local organization called Martha’s Table. Her happy places are on a beach, on her yoga mat, or on a plane headed somewhere tropical.

Reese Samuel - Program Coach: Select, Age Group 3.

From Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and attending Howard University. He grew up swimming for Upper St Clair Highschool and eventually Howard University. Winning a state championship and Conference Championship respectively. He lives in Brookland, DC and coaches the Howard University swim team as well. He also plays competitive Call of Duty for the University, in which he also won a championship. Being captain of two swim teams, he is very adept to being a leader.

Nick Netto - Program Coach: Age Group 1

Holden Shatouhy - Program Coach: Age Group 2, Select Assistant

From Ringwood, NJ, Holden is a former collegiate swimmer at Ithaca College. He grew up swimming for the Bergen Barracudas, and before coaching with us, he was the Head Coach of the Waldwick Warriors for five years. He currently lives in D.C. and works for The Catholic University of America on their communications team while getting his MSB there.
